Pop star Rihanna has joined Chris Miller and Matt Landon's untitled Smurfs as the voice of Smurfette - and she will also be composing original music for the film. Paramount Pictures made the announcement during their special panel at CinemaCon 2023.
It was announced last year that the untitled Smurfs film would be a musical, which explains why Rihanna was tapped to voice the female lead. Possessing one of the most influential voices in modern music, Rihanna regularly steals the spotlight on some of the music industry's biggest stages, including at the Oscars and this year's Super Bowl. His songs have also been featured in dozens of movies and TV shows, most recently Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, for which he released two singles.
Rihanna is also no stranger to the world of acting, having starred in films such as Ocean's 8 and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. On television, she has also played Marion Crane in Bates Motel. All of this proves that Rihanna remains a versatile artist, capable of handling very different projects. So, he would be a perfect fit in the new Smurfs movie. And since the upcoming animated film is also a musical, we can also expect to hear some new songs from the singer.
Created by Belgian comic artist Peyo, the Smurfs are tiny blue humanoid creatures who live in an enchanted forest and often have to defend themselves from attacks by the evil Gargamel. Initially, all Smurf characters were male until the introduction of Smurfette, who was created by Gargamel to infiltrate the group and wreak havoc from within.
Despite this heartless beginning, Smurfette became a valued ally and part of the family, which made her a fan favorite character and one of the most interesting Smurfs ever. While we don't know much about the plot of the new film, it's comforting to know that Smurfette will be one of the main characters, with big stars like Rihanna providing her voice.

The last time the Smurfs hit theaters was in 2017 with Smurf: The Lost Village, an animated film that places Smurfette at the center of the story and addresses the representation of women in the franchise. At that time, Demi Lovato voiced the character. The new Smurfs film is planned to be released on February 14 2025.
